London Court Records from 1674 to 1834
They have scanned the actual court records of over 100,000 cases, and sorted them so you can search using all sorts of criteria. In many cases they have typed up the case so you don't have to attempt reading original printed version.

My fav so far:

A married woman lately living without Cripplegate, that appeared to be between 30 and 40 years of age, was arrigned, For that she having not the fear of God before her eyes, nor regarding the order of Nature, on the 23. of June last, to the disgrace of all womankind, did commit Buggery with a certain Mungril Dog, and wickedly, divellishly, and against nature had venerial and Carnal copulation with him, &c. It was was proved that the Prisoner was a person of a lewd conversation, and lodging in a Room into which there were several holes to look in at from the next house, they had often seen her in the very acts of uncleanness with Villains that followed her; but one day one of the Witnesses (a young woman) happening to cast her eye in, saw her use such actions with a Dog as are not fit here to be recited: At which being amazed, she called up another woman, and after that a man, who all saw her several times practising this beastliness, and fully evidenced the same in Court, where the Dog was likewise brought, add being set on the Bar before the Prisoner, owned her by wagging his tail, and making motions as it were to kiss her, which 'twas sworn she did do when she made that horrid use of him. For her self she had nothing to say, but denying the fact, alleadging it was mallice in the Witnesses, which her Husband, who appeared in her behalf likewise suggested, but could not make out any quarrel or occasion of any such malice in the least; whereupon after full consideration of all circumstances she was brought in guilty.

Woman fucks dog. Dog is brought into trial as witness. Woman burns to death.

This one is about one Lord Muggleton, self proclaimed prophet:

And as all Hereticks covet to be Authors and Ring-leaders to a Sect, so by divers printed Books and Corner conferences, he easily seduced divers weak and instable people (especially of the Female-Sex) to become his Proselytes, who from him call themselves Muggletonians: So impossible it is for the wildest and most senseless, as well as most impious Notions, when broached with impudence among the Rabble, not to meet with some heads so irregular as to embrace them for serious Truths, or divine Revelations.

What a fascinating library... weird to think that as bizarre and comical as it all seems now, these cases meant life and death to the people involved.

This is interesting:

April 20th, 1976 - Gabriel Lawrence, was indicted for feloniously commiting with Thomas Newton, aged 30 Years, the heinous and detestable Sin of Sodomy. Thomas Newton thus depos'd.

April 20th, 1976 - Wiiliam Griffin, was indicted for Commiting Sodomy with Thomas Newton, May 10. Thomas Newton thus depos'd.

April 20th, 1976 - Thomas Wright, was indicted for committing Buggery with Thomas Newton, January 10 1724. Thomas Newton thus depos'd.

So basically this Thomas Newton testified against all of his old gay sex buddies on the same day. I wonder why. My guess is he was either an undercover police agent or someone who was going to be charged with the Sin of Sodomy and struck a deal, turning in other Buggers in exchange for his freedom. That site appears to be full of great vague stories like that, plus it's kind of funny the way they capitalize every other word.

I wonder why some of them were indicted for Sodomy and some for Buggery... aren't those the same thing? Also, it's odd that they were indicted in 1976 for crimes committed over 200 years earlier.

I can't find any of those people when I search... I suspect their search engine is not so good.

Oh chit. That's what I get for writing a comment on the go. I would have just copied and pasted but my computer illiterate ass couldn't figure out how to do that and not have the text be huge. Those things, of course, actually happened in the 1726. I don't think "depos'd" was popular terminology in the 1970's.

I just found them by searching for Sin of Sodomy crimes. There were a bunch of other people accused in the same month by a different witness, some of which were found not guilty, which suggests there was some sort of Buggery cleanup by the police in effect that year. There might be more information in the test but the old timey language is kind of hard to translate at times.

Well that explains the year discrepancy. Still not sure why some of them were sodomites while others were buggerers. One thing this shows for sure though: as bad as our criminal justice system is now, it could be a hell of a lot worse.
