Ignorance is on the Move Again
It's like the "Secret" for Aids.

I came across this while checking out the new movie trailers on Apple's site. It's a preview of the film "House of Numbers". The latest in pseudoscience pseudo-documentary film making. It's sad that this even exists, and frankly, I'm disgusted that Apple is even hosting the trailer.
Aids denialism has popped up in some of the more backwards parts of Africa, but for this to be presented in America in the 21st century is completely absurd.

The wikipedia article on "Aids denialism" makes for some frighteningly interesting reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIDS_denialism
"Public health researchers in South Africa and at Harvard University have independently investigated the effect of AIDS denialism. Their estimates attribute 330,000 to 340,000 AIDS deaths, along with 171,000 other HIV infections and 35,000 infant HIV infections, to the South African government's former embrace of AIDS denialism"
While I am completely a proponent of free speech, I feel that Apple, movie theaters, and other media outlets have a responsibility to the public to prevent the spread of this type of misinformation. I'm certainly not worried about this converting most people, but even a small number of people persuaded by this film represents a serious social health risk.

On one hand, I'm sure there has been a lot of overhyping of just about everything to do with HIV and AIDS. It's a scary issue that plucks at peoples' emotions and is a perfect tool for manipulating people by preying on their fears. Fear of death, fear of sex, fear of homosexuality, doctors, needles, drug users... It would be a miracle if the media portrayal of HIV wasn't completely skewed by fear.

On the other hand, the preview makes this movie look like it's basically using ambush interviews and vague insinuations to cast doubt without any real scientific basis.

I'll admit that the specifics of the research linking HIV to AIDS is way over my head, and I wouldn't have any idea if it were complete fabrication. And I'm willing to (for the purposes of argument) discount the entire scientific community as being somehow corruptible and complicit in spreading the lie. But there are still mountains of evidence that show that the drugs designed to work on HIV and the exposure prevention strategies based on the link between HIV and AIDS do work, and have saved thousands if not millions of lives. That alone makes a pretty strong case for HIV/AIDS.

Does anyone know of a good film or book distilling the history of AIDS research without a strong fearmongering slant in either direction? I would like to know more about the discovery of HIV but I don't want to be preached at or have to wade through technical medical writing that I don't understand.

apparently Robert Gallo is to blame- the swine!

In all seriousness, I saw a lecture in a seminar series at UCSD by Dr. Moore who has dedicated a sizeable chunk of his life's research to studying the origin of HIV/AIDS. He recommends "King Leopold's Ghost" for historical background on colonialism in Africa. His publications on the origin of AIDS can be downloaded here: #13 and #20. He's also a super sweet person if you just wanted to e-mail and ask I'm sure that he'd send you further information.

I can't help but wonder what their motives are. It's either part of a deceitful plan to convince the public that AIDS isn't a genuine problem (though the potential advantages of that are lost on me as well), or these people genuinely believe that AIDS isn't real, so strongly that trying to disprove it is their top priority. Either way, it looks like the acceptance of conspiracy theory based guerilla journalism as valid "alternate opinion" is sadly continuing. It started with Michael Moore, who I think destroyed his credibility (though not his popularity) but usingsome despicable and dishonest tactics in order to prove his points. Once the approach had been taken to the extreme with "Loose Change" and similarly ridiculous conspiracy theorist garbage, it paved the way for just about anyone with a camera to use a similar approach any apply it to just about any opinion imaginable. More on this later.

Guaranteed formula for documentary success:

- Come up with a ridiculous premise that flies in the face of virtually the entire body of scientific knowledge.

- Find a couple of "experts" who want to be famous.

- Interview legitimate scientists under false pretenses, bait them with leading questions, and condense the interviews into a handful of suggestive soundbites.

- Stitch it together with vague insinuations and a dark soundtrack.

- Bonus points for referring to the coverup by "Big Something".

An article about Peter Duesberg, one of the scientists who continues to claim that HIV does not cause AIDS.
