Swarm Behavior
A simple but fairly interesting article on how the study of Swarm Theory is influencing the management of complex human problems like traffic and truck routes.

Very interesting article. The really cool part was the real-world applications of ant logic to airport terminals and the other situations where a human-designed model just wasn't cutting it.

Fascinating. What if humans could be in a group without leaders. Very cool stuff.

In some ways I think we already are... We have elected and appointed leaders, but it seems like a lot of political decisions are based around polls, which are the representation of the collective will of many many individuals.

I agree. What worries me though is, in our current system, unelected individuals can have a strong influence on the will of the collective via charisma and demagoguery.

That may all just be part of the swarm behavior though. I'm sure some bees are better dancers than others, and some ants are probably better at touching feelers than others too.

I've never heard of a demagogue being able to influence the masses all by himself. There's always a small circle of dedicated followers that turns on a larger circle of less dedicated followers and so on out to the fringes where people are still thinking for themselves.
