Be afraid of Google?
An anti-Google privacy group bought some jumbo-tron time in Time Square to show this really creepy video. Their goal is to have legislation create a 'do not track me' list to allow people to opt-out of data tracking/mining.

I don't know, should we fear what Google knows?

Hunter S. Thompson: Rare Articles
Since I haven't posted anything in a while and since Carl won't post this until at least 2015... here's a link to some old and rare HST articles Carl sent me a while ago. There's some good stuff here, I particularly enjoyed the two on Big Sur and the one about L.A.

Michael Jackson - Leave Me Alone video
I didn't even know this existed until right now. The song is not particularly special but the video is crazy great.

Awkward Family Photos
A nice collection of user-submitted pictures that never should have been taken. The guy also made a book of of these pics that is available for those who want a hard-copy of what not to do when taking pictures.

More hand-selected pic's in extended.

Hacking speed/red-light camera systems
I don't know if this will actually work but I guess it's worth a shot, right? Someone came up with the idea to use a SQL injection type hack against image/text recognition camera systems used for speed and red-light cameras. If the syntax is correct and the input data not filtered properly, it's possible to actually hack the system running this database query and alter it in some fashion.

Wouldn't want to be the guinea pig on this, but it would be interesting if it worked!

Joke responses to craigslist ads, most of which are pretty hilarious!

Now fixed so that I didn't forget the link.

Twenty 5-second films
Just a youtube video but it made me laugh. For 3:18 you get 20 short films plus some filler material. Awesome!

Hot 'n' Cold by Los Colorados
In case you were wondering what a shitty American pop song would sound like when performed by a Ukrainian polka band.

I can't exactly call it good, but watching it made me really happy.

TVTropes.org is a massive wiki-based repository of all the cliches and recycled bits that make TV and movies tick. Link goes directly to "The Bald of Awesome", which is a good place to start.

No more spending limits for political campaigns
In a decision today, the US Supreme Court overturned previous bans on campaign funding by private organizations (i.e. corporations), stating that corporations were entitled to the same first amendment rights as individuals.

Singing about the body
Based on samples from thousands of songs, FleshMap has a chart showing the frequency with which various body parts are mentioned in a variety of different genres. No real surprises, but it's interesting for a quick look.

The Things
A short story by Peter Watts based on John Carpenter's epic The Thing, which was in turn based on John W. Campbell's Who Goes There.

It's an interesting and thoughtful take on the movie that I quite enjoyed.

How to Stop Alien Abductions
Detailed instructions for making and using a special hat that keeps aliens from reading your mind.

I heart the internet.

Aliens will try to stop you from wearing the helmet both mentally and physically. Remember that they can read your mind. Before you make one they may try to influence you that you don’t need one. Once you start wearing a helmet they may harass you or perhaps threaten to kill a pet in retaliation. They are good at manipulating your spouse to have a conflict with you about wearing the helmet.

Earthmine One-Ups Google Streetview with Real 3d data
Wired: "San Franciscans may have noticed an odd, camera-laden car driving through city streets taking photos of everything, but this time, it wasn’t Google. The car belongs instead to earthmine, whose cameras capture more data than Google’s do, using a higher-resolution, stereo photography technique that assigns specific points in space to every captured surface."
